Wildfire Pulse — July 29, 2026: Area Burned Growth Stays Slow for a Second Day

The signal this series said to watch for — area burned growth staying low for multiple consecutive days — just showed up. Two straight days of roughly 20,000-hectare daily growth, down from over 300,000/day at the peak.

  • Wildfires reported today: 36 (up from 27 the day before)
  • Wildfires year-to-date: 4,234 (up from 4,201 — +33)
  • Area burned year-to-date: 3,754,844 hectares (up from 3,731,203 — an increase of about 23,600 hectares)

What this means

Yesterday's post set an explicit test: if area-burned growth stayed low for another 2-3 days, that would be the first real evidence of sustained cooling in this series, rather than a single-day blip. Today's reading passes that test for day two — the daily increase (~23,600 ha) is close to yesterday's (~20,400 ha), and both are roughly 15x smaller than the >300,000-hectare daily pace seen during the Jul 24–27 re-acceleration.

Active fire count and new fires reported both rose slightly today, which on its own might read as renewed activity. But read alongside a still-slow area-burned figure, the more consistent interpretation is that new, smaller fires are starting while the large fires driving most of the cumulative damage remain under control — not that the season is reversing again. This is the second time this series has needed to separate "fire count" from "area burned" as different signals, and the second time area burned has been the one that held steady.
